Over 80 companies from 12 countries displayed their new products and services in the field of home and office printing. China had the most representative group of exhibitors - 45 companies, followed by Russia, Germany, Turkey and South Korea.
Over 1200 visitors attended the expo during the 3 day period. Hit the jack-pot with HP: a new campaign in Latin America

HP is now running a campaign in Latin America to attract the local customer to buy more HP original cartridges. The campaign does also mean to discredit the advantage of alternative printing solutions. The website in Spanish targeting local users explains that remanufactured products are nothing but waste of time, ink and paper and that remanufactured cartridges may damage printing equipment.
HP also offers some statistical information to compare the advantages of the original cartridges vs. non-genuine ones.
In terms of volume, original HP cartridges print 119% more pages than generic brand cartridges. In terms of reliability, HP cartridges give 0.0% of failure, whereas generic cartridges: 29.2%, and refilled cartridges: 41.8% average failure rate.
Besides the "frightening" information, HP offers users to take part in the Jackpot game. By buying genuine cartridges users can find a promo code on the box. After introducing the code, they can create accounts, play the game and, if lucky, get pricy prizes. The game can be found at the website www.hp.com/la/jackpot . The promotion targets consumers in Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.
This campaign is the second of the type, which have taken place recently. We already mentioned the one in Oceania. HP seems to be testing the campaign in strategically less important regions, before putting it out at a larger scale.

New InkSave program from Dell
Dell announced the launch of its new InkSave program, within which users can return used ink cartridges for an automatic replacement.
The model applied by Dell resembles the one used by Netflix: users return movies in a prepaid envelope and receive the next movie in their list. Dell’s InkSave looks similar to the above model: Dell ships new printers with a pre-installed cartridge and a spare one. When the installed cartridge runs out of ink, the user can send it back in a prepaid envelope to get a new one from Dell. The billing for the new cartridge is done automatically to the user’s account or credit card.
Users can simply sign up for the program on Dell’s website. Then they are sent the kit with the cartridge and envelopes.

Canon opens a new cartridge-manufacturing plant
On May 1, Canon opened a new $640 million cartridge-manufacturing facility in Oyster Point, Virginia, USA, that will bring 1,000 jobs to the region by 2013.The 700,000-square-foot building is finished but will not start operations until the end of the year or early 2010, Rhonda Bunn, a spokeswoman for Canon Virginia, said Thursday. Equipment will be installed from May to October and then tested for several weeks, she said.
Canon, she said, promised to hire 1,000 workers for the facility by 2013. It already has hired 250. Canon has been in Newport News for 23 years and employed about 1,500 people before the expansion.
The printing company chose Newport News for the expansion because "Canon wants to build products in the region near the consumer," Bunn said.
The laser-cartridge facility is the largest piece of Canon Virginia's expansion, one of the state's biggest economic-development coups in recent years.

Cartridge World sees profit increase in economic turmoil
President of the Tri-Cities stores, Kay Brewer, says companies that are helping people save money, are the ones doing well in today's market. She says everyone is trying to save money, and buying recycled print cartridges is just one way. Brewer explains, "They're around 30% to 40% off of what a new one is, and the best part is that you don't have to wait when you come in. We have them ready to go, so it's one trip; you save gas too."
Brewer calls Cartridge World a "recession proof" business. She says more companies and schools are turning to them to save money, instead of buying brand new toner, which costs more.
The company is doing so well that they are opening a new branch in Walla Walla in May, and they've even hiring.

Samsung launches program to combat toner cartridge counterfeiting
Samsung Electronics America has announced this week the success of a program designed to help protect customers and resellers from counterfeit laser cartridges, part of a worldwide anti-counterfeiting effort by Samsung that uses security features and experienced investigators and prosecutors to identify and indict those engaged in the manufacture and distribution of imitation product.
Since 2008, this effort has resulted in at least 13 seizures of cartridges, components, supplies and equipment that have a collective retail value exceeding $3 million. Efforts have netted over 30,000 cartridges and components found in the United States, Brazil, Peru and Bolivia.
As the company states, the effort seeks to protect customers from the poor print quality, short cartridge life spans, toner leakages and printer failures associated with counterfeit product, which ultimately leads to higher printing and maintenance costs.

Cartridge costs are on the rise in North America
Almost all of the printer manufacturers increased their prices for printing supplies. According to the web portal Printer.com, there have been several increases registered at the U.S. market lately.
As of September 1, 2008, HP increased the list prices on all Mono and Color LaserJet Print Cartridges by 5%, as well as increasing by approximately 5-6% the list prices on inkjet cartridges and print heads. The company says this was done as part of HP's portfolio management.
As of November 3rd, 2008, Lexmark made an across the board 5% price increase on printer supplies, while Xerox raised the price on selected products from 3% to 6%. But also Brother, Canon, and Oki are increasing printer supplies prices. Oki has said that prices of ink and toner cartridges are going up a flat 5%, but Brother and Canon have not stated a rate of increase yet.
Although consumers will likely not feel a significant impact from this price increase, small and large businesses with tens, or even hundreds, of printers will see a significant rise in their cost of printing.
Printer manufacturers also significantly increased their prices of printer cartridges in Europe in the last few months. New questions are expected in the European Commission in reaction to cartridge price increases.

Trends on the Russian Market of Printing Devices and Cartridges
The Russian company Teko, one of the leading distributors and suppliers of printing equipment and supplies, made a list of trends, which shaped in 2007 in Russia:
#1: Growing tempo falls and dumping is not a way-out:
Russian marketing of printing equipment cannot boast of 20-25% yearly growth anymore. Some segments show good growth rates, but the overall market growth is slowing down. In 2007shipments of printing equipment grew by 17-20%, which is lower than during 2006 or 2005.
#2: Fluctuatuations in USD rates:
The falling USD and growing EUR and their constant fluctuations made a lot of local importing companies to switch to RUR, which showed higher stability.
#3: Chips and laser color devices are the truth of the day:
Monochrome laser printers sink into oblivion. They are becoming real rarities. Ignoring color is the direct way to failure.
The full report in Russian can be downloaded from here.

Xerox to offer refill kits for Xerox Work Center 3119
"Consumer Reports" about photo printers
The US based magazine ConsumerReports made up an interesting list of things to consider before buying a photo printer in its July issue.
These guidelines do point out what shoudl be considered before buying!
ConsumerReport, July'07, p.37:
"Weigh ink costs.
High ink costs can make a bargain-priced printer a bad deal in the long run. With many tested models, a4 x 6 cost 30 or 35cents; on others, it was 45 or 50 cents -up to twice what you might pay at a photo lab. For 8xlOs, costs ranged from 75 cents to $1.45, a huge difference.
Don't choose a printer solely because of low cartridge costs, though. Kodak is touting the low cost of cartridges for its new EasyShare 5300, a $200 all-in-one, but our tests showed that photo costs were comparable to those of other printers- 35cents for 4x6 photos and $1 for 8xlOs - and print quality was middling.
Look for convenience features.
If you’ll be printing snapshots as well as 8xlOs and text pages, a second tray for 4x6 paper is handy. And make sure you don't have to swap out black to use photo ink. A few models still require that.
Take claims with a grain of salt.
Advertised speeds are often higher than you'll get in normal use. Our tests yield realistic speeds you can compare across brands. A printer's resolution, in dots per inch (dpi) can be confusing as well. All things being equal, the more ink dots a printer puts on the paper, the more detailed the image. But dot size, shape, and placement affect quality. So don't focus only on resolution. The same holds true for ink colors. Some inkjets use up to eight photo inks. Theoretically, a wider range of colors can improve a printer's flesh tones and color gradations, but that hasn't always been the case in our tests."
Very insteresting observations and advice...
