New InkSave program from Dell

Dell announced the launch of its new InkSave program, within which users can return used ink cartridges for an automatic replacement.

The model applied by Dell resembles the one used by Netflix: users return movies in a prepaid envelope and receive the next movie in their list. Dell’s InkSave looks similar to the above model: Dell ships new printers with a pre-installed cartridge and a spare one. When the installed cartridge runs out of ink, the user can send it back in a prepaid envelope to get a new one from Dell. The billing for the new cartridge is done automatically to the user’s account or credit card.

Users can simply sign up for the program on Dell’s website. Then they are sent the kit with the cartridge and envelopes.

Sancon from China to expand its recycling capabilities

The Chinese company Sancon, a local environmental services and waste recycling company, announced that it inked an agreement with Close the Loop Limited to form a joint venture with the purpose of setting up a state-of-the-art 6,000 square meters facility which will recycle toner and inkjet cartridges with zero waste to landfill, and return the raw materials back to the original manufacturer for reuse in new printers and cartridges.

China currently consumes over 100 million printer cartridges on an annual basis. Sancon will consolidate the results of the joint venture under GAAP. Close the Loop has successfully operated a similar Facility in Australia.

Close the Loop is widely recognized in Australia for its ability to efficiently and cost-effectively process all-in-one toner cartridges, ink jets, toner bottles, drum units, fuser assemblies and other waste. It works closely with some of the top printer cartridge makers in the world, and counts IBM, HP, Epson, Brother, Cannon, Toshiba amongst its partners and clients.

HP is going to double the recycled plastic in its cartridges

Printweek.com has announced that HP will double the amount of recycled plastic used in its inkjet print cartridges this year. The company made 200 million original HP inkjet print cartridges from recycled plastic in 2007. Now the company put in function a new recycling process. The multi-phase recycling process reduces the cartridges to raw materials, such as plastics and metals. HP then combines plastic from the inkjet cartridges with recycled bottle resin and a suite of compounding additives.

The total plastic in a cartridge is 70-100% recycled content, while stringent testing ensures consistency and reliability of the product.

Michael Hoffmann, senior vice president for the supplies, imaging and printing group at HP, said the technology reduced the company's impact on the environment.

"HP's considerable investments in building a recycling infrastructure made this achievement possible, and this is just the beginning of what we hope to accomplish," Hoffmann said.

HP's Planet Partners program offers free and easy cartridge returns in more than 45 countries, regions and territories, with a commitment that all returned cartridges would be recycled.

After this piece of news was published there were a couple of commentaries left. They do provide some insight why HP's recycling program may turn out to be less "green" than it claims to be.

Jeff Harper : You can't help but wonder how many millions of perfectly good, re-usable cartridges have been sacrificed at the altar of HP's "environmental mission". Recycling is the 2nd WORST thing you can do, re-use is the 2nd BEST thing. HP (and the other OEM's) go to amazing lengths to recover perfectly good empty cartridges and destroy them by crushing/processing/pulping etc.

Charyle Calvert: The latest "green movement" is calling for more eco-friendly ways to reduce global warming. Recycling often involves methods that can contribute to global warming. Reusing, remanufacturing and repairing products and supplies are the first line of defense. Once a product can no longer be repaired, remanufactured or reused, then the recycling method is the end of the road for that item. Anything put together with screws should be repairable. The limitation to repair is created by the OEM's who do not provide for accessibility to repair parts! This should be absolutely illegal in a society attempting to reduce e-waste.

Hewlett-Packard teams with Staples

HP, the world's largest printer maker, expanded its recycling program by letting customers drop off spent cartridges at Staples Inc.'s 1,500 U.S. stores from November, 2008.

Customers will receive $3 toward Staples' purchases after they return inkjet and toner cartridges, Hewlett-Packard said in a statement. Up until now, cartridges had mainly been returned by mail.

Hewlett-Packard said it has recycled more than 250 million printer cartridges since 1991, and more than 600,000 pounds (about 272,000 kilograms) of shipping materials will be used to return ink cartridges by mail this year. The company will offer recycling at other retailers next year, said Jean Gingras, environmental program manager for the printer unit.

Hewlett-Packard is also doubling the size of its ink cartridge recycling center in Nashville, Tennessee, to more than 80,000 square feet, Gingras said. Hewlett-Packard includes some recycled materials in new products and used more than 5 million pounds of recycled plastics from water bottles and cartridges last year. It plans to double that amount this year.

Redeem Plc expands its activity in Turkey

Redeem Plc, the UK-based mobile phone and cartridge recycling company, announced a further expansion drive with the planned opening of operations in Turkey. Redeem Turkey, to be based in Istanbul, will introduce mobile phone recovery and recycling to Turkey for the first time. Targeting mobile network operators, manufacturers, businesses and consumers, the business will provide a new service to Turkish recycling and recovery markets.

The business will be run through a licensed agreement, showing a strong display of confidence and investment in the Redeem offering.

Redeem has already undertaken successful campaigns in Ireland and Italy working with the country’s largest operators. In Italy Redeem already manages successful campaigns with TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile) and Motorola and also in Ireland with O2, to offer customers a trade in and discount opportunity for new mobile handsets.

Redeem is also currently looking at ongoing opportunities within the UK market and has further plans for expansion beyond Europe.

Results of RechargEast 2008 Expo.

RechargEast Trade Show 2008 took place on May 21-23, 2008, in Moscow, Russia, for the 5th time in its history. RechargEast trade shows are the most significant event in the imaging supplies aftermarket in the Russian Federation and CIS countries. Reputed in such a manner, the trade show attracts a large number of foreign companies promoting their products at the international level. Covering one of the largest and most perspective markets in the world (Russia and CIS) the trade show helps non-Russia companies find local parents and network actively, which is mandatory for successful business in the region. Therefore, RechargEast shows are so popular with Asian and Western European supplies and distributors of raw materials and parts for the printer cartridge remanufacturing and recharging process.

For local remanufacturing companies RechargEast shows have become the traditional meeting place very important for finding serious suppliers, for learning about industry news and for acquiring new practical knowledge and skills.

In 2008 RechargEast show had changed its usual format. The exhibition was divided into two areas: in one area local companies presented its products, in the other foreign companies demonstrated its achievements as well as discussed collaborative perspectives with the largest local companies. In other words, foreign companies had a great chance of communicating with the most interesting visitors to them: companies, which import products for selling in their own countries.


According to the data presented by the Russian company LINTEK, the registration-desk sponsor 2008, over 2500 visits were registered during the 3 exhibition days. That is, almost 1500 remanufacturing specialists, salesmen, decision makers from the industry from different companies visited the exhibition during the 3-day period.

This year the exhibition hosted two educational centers:

- Technical seminars and lectures were organized at the booth of UNINET Imaging: the lectured were presented by Mike Josiah, one of the most renowned technical specialists from North America, who is a permanent author of technical article in RechargEast Magazine and many other industry publications.
- Technical seminars and hands-on lessons were also held in the RechargEast Education Center. These seminars were offered to the public by Alexey Voevodin, a young and ambitious specialist from the Kiev-based company Alekhan-Service.


The day of May 22 was the “rush” period of the exhibition. At 11.00 the VIP forum sponsored by the Russian company IRWIN was opened. The forum gathered over 60 owners and top managers from local and foreign companies. The attendees discussed most urgent topics for the local and global aftermarket of imaging supplies for over 2 hours.

On May 23 a commission made of local and foreign exhibitors announced the winners of “The Most Active Russian Exhibitor”. The prize was awarded to two local companies ITCO Trading and GEST since the jury’s votes were equally divided.

At the end of the exhibition, on May 23, the Russian company IRWIN organized the traditional competition “The Fastest RechargEast”. This year the competition rules were made more complex: besides being quick and skillful, the participants were to distinguish between 5 different OPC drums; each successful go would bring a point.

In order to draw the final line, it’s possible to say RechargEast 2008 was successful. It gave the exhibitors and visitors not only the possibility to communicate, but also a good chance of taking part in various educational and entertaining activities supposed for boosting their professional skills.
